Creative/Literary Nonfiction

For this assignment i chose: "Simple" by Kerrie Kemperman.

I cant relate to any of the other stories i read but this one. The sentence: "The days seemed infinite, the car rides long and tortuous, summers stretched on and on like the hums of cicadas". reminds me of the summers i used to spend as a child and how they felt long and torturous instead of fun and exciting. i also enjoyed the honest description of the farms and houses given by the narrators father.

Raymond Carver

For this post i chose the short story "little things". I cant really say i liked the story as i find it depressing yet true to human nature. People want things to be their way to an extent of harming others in order to get what they want. This story contains allusions to failing marriages, there is so much spite and hate sometimes that this ends up affecting children not only physically but mentally as well. This story may also be an allusion to his own life as his father was an abusive alcoholic who mistreated his family.

Picture

Today after class i walked around campus and saw something that caught my attention. The wind was blowing and it made the tree branches move. This reminded me of the wind of misfortune that changed Erendiras life and it make me wonder; is someones life about to be ruined somewhere around campus?

When have i conformed?

When have i been a Rhinoceros:
I have been a rhinoceros most of my life i usually just go with the flow and follow the large group, nothing unique or special about me. I try not to stand out.
When have i been like Berenger:
I have been like Berenger on a few occasions throughout life usually when i am encouraged to do something i don't want to ill just stick to my decision. an example could be during my high school graduation i was encouraged by the teachers and students to stay around in order to say goodbye. I had no intention of overdoing my stay that day so as soon as the event was over I walked out.

Song Lyrics

Don't Stop Me Now

Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real good time
I feel alive
And the world, I'll turn it inside out yeah
I'm floating around in ecstasy
So don't stop me now
Don't stop me
'cause I'm having a good time
Having a good time

I'm a shooting star leaping through the sky
Like a tiger defying the laws of gravity
I'm a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva
I'm gonna go go go there's no stopping me
I'm burning through the sky yeah
Two hundred degrees that's why they call me Mr. Fahrenheit
I'm traveling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic man out of you

Don't stop me now
I'm having such a good time
I'm having a ball
Don't stop me now
If you wanna have a good time
Just give me a call
Don't stop me now
'cause I'm having a good time
Don't stop me now
Yes I'm having a good time
I don't wanna stop at all

I'm a rocket ship on my way to Mars
On a collision course
I am a satellite
I'm out of control
I'm a sex machine ready to reload
Like an atom bomb about to oh oh oh oh oh explode!
I'm burning through the sky yeah
Two hundred degrees that's why they call me Mr. Fahrenheit
I'm traveling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic woman of you

Don't stop me don't stop me, don't stop me hey hey hey!
Don't stop me don't stop me ooh ooh ooh
I like it
Don't stop me don't stop me
Have a good time good time
Don't stop me don't stop me
ohhhhhhh!

ohhhhhhh
Burning through the sky yeah
Two hundred degrees that's why they call me Mr. Fahrenheit
I'm traveling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic man out of you

Don't stop me now
I'm having such a good time
I'm having a ball
Don't stop me now
If you wanna have a good time
Just give me a call
Don't stop me now
'cause I'm having a good time
Don't stop me now
Yes I'm having a good time
I don't wanna stop at all

Da da da da daaaa da da da
Ha da da ha ha ha ha
Ha da da da da

I chose this song because it contains many literary devices. There are hyperbole; "And the world, I'll turn it inside out yeah", "I'm burning through the sky yeah" and "I'm traveling at the speed of light". There is simile; "I'm a shooting star leaping through the sky like a tiger defying the laws of gravity". last but not least if the reader examines the lyrics he or she can find an allusion to masturbation, this is not found in a single sentence but could ambiguously be the meaning of the song.

Spring Poem

Ode to Spring
by Frederick Seidel

I can only find words for.
And sometimes I can't.
Here are these flowers that stand for.
I stand here on the sidewalk.

I can't stand it, but yes of course I understand it.
Everything has to have meaning.
Things have to stand for something.
I can't take the time. Even skin-deep is too deep.

I say to the flower stand man:
Beautiful flowers at your flower stand, man.
I'll take a dozen of the lilies.
I'm standing as it were on my knees

Before a little man up on a raised
Runway altar where his flowers are arrayed
Along the outside of the shop.
I take my flames and pay inside.

I go off and have sexual intercourse.
The woman is the woman I love.
The room displays thirteen lilies.
I stand on the surface.

I chose this poem for a few reason. i find the ending to be hilarious, I also find the poem to be different from some of the other options as its beauty is not ruined by religious messages. I also like it because it keeps things simple its just about a man buying flowers for his lady.

Ode by Pablo Neruda

I chose Ode to Clothes, in the beginning two sentences; "Every morning you wait, clothes, over a chair". made me laugh as it explains exactly what i do every day. Every night before sleeping i grab clothes from my closet  and place them on a chair, these are the clothes ill be wearing the next day. Besides this i also chose this ode because i find it more entertaining than the others it started making me laugh and then suddenly the ode turns darker and sad;
"I wonder
if one day
a bullet
from the enemy
will leave you stained with my blood
and then
you will die with me
"
